Continuing from an idea in my Piano Sonata #1, here’s my Prelude and 3 Variations.

The idea is that at each moment, or musical event, either new elements are introduced or earlier elements are copied over which then may or may not be altered (pitch, duration, dynamics, etc.). These elements then become seed material for future elements.

This was also written some 20 years ago so I do not remember exactly everything I was doing but I’m pretty sure there were some indeterminate techniques used in composing it.

It is also a different take on the idea of a musical variation. One that eschews the normal harmonic and melodic ideas and instead treats the individual musical elements as the fodder for variations without regard to any particular conventional thematic idea.

A modernist take on the variation.
